The Bracken Ridge – Blackall connection
This display celebrates the friendships forged between parishioners of St Joseph and St Anthony, Bracken Ridge and the people of Blackall. In 2016, the parish of St Joseph and St Anthony decided on an outreach program to support a Queensland community impacted by drought. The Bishop of Rockhampton nominated Blackall and St Patrick’s Parish as a community that could benefit from assistance. In the years since, parishioners from Bracken Ridge and the central western town of Blackall have forged a partnership highlighted by support on the ground and donations of goods for the annual St Patrick’s parish Fete and regular financial donations. This display features gifts presented to the parish of St Joseph and St Anthony by the people of St Patrick’s, Blackall.
The Roly Poly
This “Roly Poly” is a smaller version of the oversized sculpture well known on Blackall’s western outskirts. The Roly Poly is a native tumbleweed that flourishes on the flood plains of the Barcoo River during good seasons. The plants dry and tumble along, gathering into large spheres that often become trapped along fence lines.
The Bottle Tree
Central Queensland is home to the Bottle Tree (Brachychiton Rupestris). Each tree has a unique shape and character including the rounded shape of the trunk that gives a bottle-like appearance. This tree was gifted to the parish of St Joseph and St Anthony by Blackall parishioners Moira and Ron Kent and is from their property Valparaiso.
The Fossilised Tree Stump
Blackall’s main street features its famous Fossilised Tree Stump. Found on Valparaiso, that stump is believed to be 1 million to 225 million years old. This fossilised stump was also found on Valparaiso and gifted to the parish of St Joseph and St Anthony.
